HISTORY

Narkoojee, meaning “place of flowers”, was a dairy farm owned and operated by Edna and Athelstan Friend, since the early 1940s. Their son Harry planted the first experimental vines back in 1980 and with his wife Val, moved to the property from Melbourne in 1995. Narkoojee had very humble beginnings with the Cellar Door operating out of a small weatherboard bungalow at the back of Harry and Val Friend’s house. The grapes were taken to the old butter factory in Glengarry, which served as their first winery. Today the winery enjoys a five red star status as rated by James Halliday.

THE NARKOOJEE DIFFERENCE

Father and son team, Harry and Axel Friend make for an unbeatable combination of talents. They share the desire to experiment with new techniques aiming to perfect the winemaking process, which along with unique micro climate and soil profile gives Narkoojee wines their unique characteristics.

NARKJOOJEE PREMIUM WINES

NOW AVAILBALE AT THE GATHERING PLACE...

2018 Lily Grace Chardonnay

This wine is vintaged from selected estate plantings and is named after Harry and Val Friend’s first grandchild, Lily Grace Friend.  Another excellent season has produced fruit of exceptional quality which was fermented using wild yeasts, indigenous to our vineyard.  The wine has been matured in older French oak barriques, with a small portion new, to introduce a note of subtle complexity to the varietal fruit.  This is a beautifully balanced wine with a lovely creamy texture, natural mineral acidity and is an ideal accompaniment to seafood.  It will develop further in the bottle over the next five years.

2018 Sauvignon Blanc

This is a new variety for Narkoojee, the fruit being sourced from the Yarra Valley, Victoria, which has a similar climate to that at Narkoojee.  The wine has been made in the Fumé Blanc style, aged in French oak barriques to emphasise its minerality and introduce a note of subtle complexity to the varietal fruit.  It is a beautifully balanced wine with a creamy texture, a long palate and natural mineral acidity.

2018 Pinot Noir

The fruit for this wine is from our estate plantings.  The wine was fermented using wild yeasts indigenous to our vineyard.  The mild 2018 season has produced an elegant wine, red cherry in colour with forest floor, dried flowers, red cherry fruit and spicy French oak.  It is a beautifully balanced wine with a long, seamless palate and silky tannins.  It will develop further in the bottle over the next five years or so.

2017 Francis Road Shiraz

The fruit for this wine was handpicked from our estate plantings and is named after the vineyard address to emphasise its terroir.  The warm 2016 season produced fruit of optimal ripeness and flavours with excellent acid retention.  This is a lovely, generous shiraz, showing black berry fruit and spicy oak which will repay cellaring for ten years or more.
